Wild Rice Protection Petition

We the undersigned demand that any and all endangerment, contamination, water pollution toxification, exploitation, threat of extermination or exploitation of the Ojibwe (Chippewa) Indigenous Red Indian Nations sacred Wild Rice called Manomen in the Ojibwe language, be stopped immediately.

Manomen is the spiritual, sacred water plant seed exotic aquatic cereal grain harvested each summer as a culturally necessary foodstuff and primary food staple of the Ojibwe Nation and Family.

We must prevent non-indigenous people, organizations, companies, and government entities from endangering, exploiting, exterminating, or misusing/abusing Manomen.

We must develop and enhance positive relationships between the United States and Indigenous Red Nations and Peoples with respect to inherent Indigenous way of life, culture, spirituality, rights and freedoms, with regards to cultural food sources and ancient sacred practices and areas.

We shall organize to implement and establish a buffer zone of 15 miles from any lake/river/water source that harbors wild rice plants, seedlings, plant growth and/or habitat, which shall protect the Manomen from mining effects and runoff/watershed of toxic or harmful chemicals, elements, or other such damaging and genocidal, extermitorial agents in order to prevent contamination of the sacred Manomen plant species and naturally growing areas.

We shall strive to place Manomen on the United States Endangered Species  list so that the sacred plant so vital to the Ojibwe family be forever protected and secured for our grandchildren and future generations.
