Demand Safety Shelters be put in Schools in Tornado Prone Areas

May 20th, 2013. A devastating F5 tornado hit Moore Oklahoma. This was the third tornado to follow the same distinct path, except this time it hit a school. Imagine your child was at this school, imagine the terror he/she may have gone through. Why aren't there storm shelters for schools? Please sign to ensure the safety of all children. We have to start sometime, now is the time.

Dear Congressman Tom Cole,

After seeing the devastation left behind by the tornado in Moore, Oklahoma, I feel a strong need to let my voice be heard, in hopes that many will understand and agree. All I propose is that the construction of schools be reconsidered to more aptly endure the physical demands nature has clearly imposed on them.

It is good to hear that some of the newer schools have storm shelters, yet there are still many schools out there that have no form of plans as to where all of the students may go to seek safety and shelter from the storm.

For instance, some children died in the basement; a place that is supposed to be a safe haven at Plaza towers elementary. As a teacher, I understand there is only a certain amount of money allotted to schools and education. In places such as Moore Oklahoma, where there is a known path of destruction due to tornado damage, there should be more money, if any, set aside for precautionary measures. We never know what may happen, or what nature has in store for us, but we can control how prepared we are for instances such as this. We can install storm cellars in every school; we can ensure the safety of our children …our future. We can make a difference.
