Bring back early intervention mental health services

A British woman recently walked a mile on crutches and smashed a shop window, then called the police on herself. Why? She believed it was the best way to access mental health support.

This is just one of many of an increasing number of incidents in which people unable to get the help they need are turning to the police in desperation. Police say that some commit petty crimes, whilst others phone the police service, concerned for themselves or otherss.

Calls to the police regarding mental health issues have increased a third since 2012. A senior police officer told the Guardian that this is a national trend, caused by cuts to the NHS at a time when need for their mental health services has increased.

Specifically, early intervention services across the UK have been slashed. These mental health services are a highly effective use of resources, and the best way to avoid escalated suffering for those at risk.
