We have too many cases of animal abusers in Singapore who were let off with a slap on their wrist.
The current maximum sentence for anyone charged in court and found guilty of animal cruelty is that they can be fined up to $15,000 and/or jailed up to 18 months.
On the news today, a businessman was fined the maximum of $10k for failing to seek a timely treatment for his adopted dog after his maid reported to him and his wife that the dog was getting very thin. (Look at the picture: You can't say the dog was consuming anything!) This is the first time the maximum fine has been imposed by the court for animal cruelty; this says a lot about our system's response to animal abusers.
Not only did the businessman keep holding off the vet visit. His wife failed to bring the poor dog for a checkup too. And yet, his wife has not been charged with animal neglect.
Court documents stated that the dog was “found to be emaciated” and appeared “to have been chronically starved or malnourished, possibly for months."
What scares me is that this family has other pet dogs too. And there are no laws in place to ban anyone from owning pets after being charged. Even more, Singapore's law is not just restricted to home owners; it also applies to illegal breeders.

Too often that animal abusers got off with just a fine.
A jail time and banning from owning a pet for life is a must!"

We demand a heavier punishment for animal abusers in Singapore. Too many times, we have seen animal abusers being punished with the equivalent of a slap on the wrist.
The current maximum sentence of 18months/$15k is apparently not enough to send the message across that Singapore will not tolerate the mistreatment of animals.

Minister K Shanmugam has discussed plans during the Asia for Animal Conference in January about heavier punishment.
"Ministry of National Development was planning to increase the penalties for animal abuse to a fine of up to $50,000 and a jail term of up to three years, or both.
