Our nation is being faced by multiple crises, each one with major importance. However, a new one has arisen, and awareness needs to be brought to it immediately.
President Donald Trump has once again asserted his authority to sweep aside environmental restraints and speed up construction of oil and gas pipelines, mines, highways and more. Declaring an economic emergency lets the president invoke a section of federal law allowing "action with significant environmental impact" without observing normal requirements imposed by laws such as the National Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act and the Clean Water Act. This will have a MAJOR impact on various ecosystems and the species that inhabit it. Right now there are 750 plants and around 540 animals that are considered endangered in the United States. Every single one of these species will now be at risk.
Not only will this have an effect on the environment, but U.S. citizens as well. Environmental groups have said sidestepping environmental review requirements would hurt many of the same communities already suffering the most from the pandemic.
This is an assault on the nation's environmental protections, and we need to stop it NOW!
