When Domino's Pizza founder Tom Monaghan sold his company to Mitt Romney's Bain Capital in 1998, he used his fortune to convert a small Florida town into a "Catholic enclave" that forbids the sale of contraception and forbids cable providers from carrying pornographic channels.
Monaghan used $300 million to open two Catholic schools in Ave Maria, Florida. One is Ave Maria University, and the other is a law school with a conservative curriculum designed with input from Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. After establishing these schools, he set out to ban all birth control pills, condoms and other contraceptives from town drug stores.
Ave Maria already had an existing population before Monaghan set out to convert it into a religious zone, and the rights of these citizens are being violated. People should not be allowed to buy a town and legislate morality within its borders just because they are rich. Please sigh the petition to urge Florida authorities to step in and reverse Monaghan's religious restrictions!
