It is not a coincidence that spending on political campaigns is at an all-time high and public perception of government and its elected representatives is at an all-time low. The unseemly piles of money heaped on politicians and their campaigns adds to a sense of apathy that only exacerbates the public's disinterest at a time when more public participation and influence is exactly what's needed.
