Petition for More Safety on Hammond Bay Rd and Ventura with lighted Crosswalk and Safety Signage

It was a clear and sunny day on March 6th, 2019.
Like any typical 17-year-old, Eric was on his way home from Dover Bay Secondary School. As he started to cross the street at the marked crosswalk, Eric was hit by an SUV only a few blocks from his school.
His injuries were so serious that he was airlifted to Victoria in critical condition.
For 6 long days Jaeheon Eric Shim's family, friends, and members of our church all prayed, cried and anxiously waited for Eric wake up from his coma.  Only Eric never opened his eyes again.

By March 12th, he was declared brain dead.
By March 15th, Eric's organs were donated to 6 people in need.
By March 18th, a loving mother, father, aunt, grandmother and community mourn the tragic loss of Eric's young life.

4 Seasons Montessori, Frank J Ney Elementary, Dover Bay Secondary and Hammond Bay Elementary are a few schools that intersect within a few blocks all along Hammond Bay Road. Many vehicles are often seen driving at 50-80 KM per hour, making it nearly impossible for pedestrians to ensure eye contact with drivers.  We must consider the potential to save lives by taking action to keep pedestrians safe along Hammond Bay Road.

No Family should be faced with such tragedy! But to lose your loved one due to a lack of safety measures taken to ensure visibility is a dreadful loss! The fact that his death was 100% preventable commands a need for more safety measures along Hammond Bay Road, especially on the at the intersection of Hammond Bay and Ventura Drive.

Eric saved 6 lives with the donation of his organs. We believe he can save more. Let's take a pro-active approach to safer roads for the pedestrians in our city!

We the undersigned call on the Nanaimo City Council to present this petition to the Director of Engineering and Public Works for the City of Nanaimo.  We are concerned citizens who urge our leaders to act now to help keep pedestrians safe with a lighted crosswalk on Hammond Bay and Ventura Rd.

Cont. letter from Bill Sims(General manager, Engineering and Public Works) :

Transportation staff are conducting a thorough engineering review at this crosswalk. The review includes speeds and volume of vehicles on Hammond Bay Road; pedestrian and cyclist numbers; visibility for on-coming traffic to see the crosswalk; location of street lights; and community planning considerations. RCMP input will play a large part in considerations for any improvements at the crosswalk.
