Anthropic researchers just warned that artificial intelligence could
kill all of humanity by 2030. In an alarming response that did not deny this, the company's own CEO, Dario Amodei, called on the entire AI industry to slow down. Sam Altman of OpenAI, Elon Musk of xAI, and Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis all backed him within days.

Despite the warnings, the response in Washington has been
almost nothing. President Trump dismissed concerns about AI-driven human extinction, saying he has none. House Speaker Mike Johnson said Congress shouldn't rush to regulate.
Meanwhile, an Anthropic engineer publicly resigned, warning that leading AI labs are racing toward systems that can hack anything and seize real power, even as they claim to be worried about the risks. A recent Anthropic report also found that hostile actors in China, Russia, Iran, and Yemen have already used AI models to attempt
cyberattacks, surveil dissidents, and explore building weapons.
The AI companies' own proposal is to
regulate themselves, using evaluators that they choose.
That is not oversight. It is the industry writing its own rules while asking the public to trust that it will hold itself accountable. Voluntary pledges can be dropped the moment they become inconvenient.
