Don't let National Geographic be bought by Rupert Murdoch

On Tuesday, September 8, 2015, the National Geographic Society, a previously nonprofit and apolitical group was purchased by an entity controlled by Rupert Murdoch, the right wing propagandist who owns Fox News and is responsible for the infamous hacking scandal in the British press.

Anyone who has the foresight beyond a snail can see that Murdoch will use this new voice in international media to attempt an all-out assault against those people who demand action in regards to climate change. Murdoch and his right-wing colleagues are the great deniers of climate change. National Geographic, and its associated broadcast outlets, was one of the great neutral voices that people looked to for guidance and reliable non-partisan information with regards to matters of science and the earth. Those waters are now forever polluted by their ownership.

Today we begin a petition drive that is two-fold in its purpose.
One: To shame the formerly non-profit National Geographic Society for selling out to a right wing propagandist.
Two: Find a way to reinstate some of the old principals of diversity of broadcast ownership.

The original Federal Communications Act of 1934 believed that the only way to preserve journalistic fairness was through diversity of ownership. That was significantly brought down by President Reagan in the 1980s and much more so by President Clinton. (It is said that the 1996 Communications Act was accompanied by a generous gift from Rupert Murdoch to the Clinton re-election effort, a check that was personally picked up by none other than the First Lady herself, Hillary Clinton.)
We seek a congressional champion for this effort.
