Senseless destruction in our oceans

It is estimated that 100 million sharks are finned every year for the consumption of “Shark Fin Soupâ€Â an Asain delicacy that is served at wedding and prestiges events. Now a days you can walk into many restaurants and see shark fin soup on their regular menu.

.What is shark finning?

Shark finning is when sharks are hunted in our oceans by fishermen, generally by long lining. Once caught the sharks fins are cut off and the shark is thrown back into the ocean.  Many times the shark is still alive when this takes place. The sharks then endure an agonizing death by either drowning, suffocating or being eaten alive by other marine life when thrown back into the ocean finless, defenceless. This barbaric & inhumane practice is cruel to say the least.

FACTS:

Did you know that generally only 10 - 15 people die a year from sharks. This due to mistaken identity by the shark.  If you think about we could easily be mistaken for its prey the seal. I would say that's pretty low compared to the 100 million that are slaughtered every year by man.

Recently while at home I started watching a program on National Geographic, I realized it was on the Black Rhino and I started to weep because just a few months earlier the black rhino became extinct from our earth. I checked the date and the program was a few years old and my heart sank & I could not watch this program. Don't let this happen to the sharks in our oceans. Let's be the generation that preserves life ...not destroy it.
