Save Historic Lambeth Field! A Community Petition
Ask the UVA Board of Visitors to REJECT any plan to turn Lambeth Field into an NCAA softball stadium when the BOV meets on February 28.
Historic Lambeth Field, with its iconic colonnade, green lawn and views of the western sunset, is widely enjoyed by students and the community. Students sunbathe, study, barbecue and play sports of all kinds; kids kick soccer balls and dogs chase frisbees. Lambeth Field is a local treasure.
• The University’s 2007 Historic Preservation Plan placed Lambeth Field’s landscape in its “essential” category.
• After years of student fundraising, a $600,000 overhaul of the Lambeth Colonnade was completed just four years ago.
• The University’s latest Master Plan for future development locates official sports venues on the west side of Emmet Street---not at the heart of UVA’s academic, arts and residential areas.
We enthusiastically support a new top-notch women’s softball complex—and insist that it be built on a site that conforms to the University’s stated intentions and values.
JOIN US to oppose any plan to turn Lambeth Field into a softball complex, where restricted access, stadium lighting, a sound system, crowd noise, a lighted scoreboard, and loss of parking and recreational space would have severe negative effects on the students living in Lambeth apartments, on the surrounding residential area, and on the academic area designated for the arts.
