Support Women's Rights in Tunisia Today

2017 was a banner year for women's' rights in Tunisia. Pushed on by activists, the government passed several bills that work towards leveling the gender disparities in the Middle Eastern nation. From lifting the ban against Muslim women marrying non-Muslim men to ditching an archaic law that allowed rapists to avoid punishment by marrying their victims. Progress has most certainly been made.

Now, the country that is considered at the forefront of the women's women's rights movement in the Arab world, is making even more headway.

On February 20th Committee on Individual Freedoms and Equality will present recommendations to the country's president. Among them, a proposal urging the government to change the law to allow women to pass their family name down to their children and have equal inheritance with men.

If the proposals are accepted and they become law they would not only have a positive effect on the lives of Tunisian women but it could encourage other more progressive Arab governments to pass similar legislation. In fact, after Tunisia scrapped their questionable laws in 2017, both Jordan and Lebanon followed suit.
