Canada, Let People Raise Their Own Food!
Calgary resident Paul Hughes needs the six chickens he's raising in his yard. A single dad and veteran living on a disability income of only $12,500 a year, Hughes notes it's his Constitutional right to have backyard chickens. But he's been told it's against the law.
In Vancouver, it's perfectly legal to have a few chickens in your backyard. But in Toronto, Winnipeg, and Calgary, homeowners who want to own a few livestock birds have been blocked by law enforcement. Why so inconsistent, Canada?
Growing your own food in small-scale, non-commercial gardens is catching on all over Canada. People can have better quality food for lower prices and avoid the moral horrors of factory farming and chemically-assisted produce by having a garden or a few chickens. It's a no-brainer for anyone with a social conscience.
Tell Canada to make small-scale urban farming legal throughout the country!
We the undersigned think you should allow all Canadians, including city residents, to raise their own food in their backyards. Locally-grown food and backyard gardens and chicken coops allow people access to fresh, affordable, organic food.
Paul Hughes is correct in asserting it's his Constitutional right to do some small-scale farming on his own Calgary property. Especially when one considers that laws in Vancouver do not prohibit such farming. Forcing people to support chain grocery stores that ship food long distance contributes to environmental degradation, especially global warming. And commercially-farmed food is rarely as healthy as locally-grown food that uses no chemical pesticides or fertilizers.
Legalize back yard chicken farming!
