Rick Santorum admits he can't "think of anything more horrible" than rape, but he still thinks rape victims should carry to term any embryos fertilized as a result of the crime.
In a recent interview with CNN, Santorum "clarified" his no-exceptions pro-life stance.
Rape victims, he explained, need to make the best of a bad situation and accept their pregnancies as a "broken gift." So, let's just make sure we all understand this.
On top of having to be hospitalized for injuries, attending therapy sessions (possibly for months), and working tirelessly with the police and courts to bring a rapist to justice, rape victims also need to start shopping for Pampers. Santorum could not make it much more clear that he is hopelessly removed from the world of ordinary Americans--who have to live on the ground and deal with life's blows as they happen. Tell Santorum not to write off the experiences of pregnant rape victims.
We the undersigned certainly agree with you that rape is a particularly horrible event, but we don't think God has anything to do with it. As such,
to insist that an embryo fertilized during rape is a "gift," broken or otherwise is a stretch we cannot make. We agree that a woman who chooses to give birth to a child conceived of rape is heroic. However, it must be HER CHOICE. She is the victim of violence. She has a natural right to determine the consequences. No politician has anything to say about this.
