In a shocking letter released Feb. 16, 2016, Apple revealed that the U.S. government has ordered it to "take an unprecedented step which threatens the security of [its] customers."
The FBI is asking Apple to write new code to hack into the iPhone of the San Bernardino shooter, but the move would have far-reaching consequences. The U.S. government's chilling request is that Apple eliminate key features of iPhone security - security that protects ALL Apple users worldwide.
Our phones are used to store an unquantifiable amount of sensitive and private information - pictures, calendars, notes, music, text messages, call history. While the government may say it will only use this backdoor once, there's no way to guarantee it won't abuse this power.
"Essentially, the government is asking Apple to create a master key so that it can open a single phone," writes the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Once that master key is created, the government will have unprecedented power to undermine the security of any Apple user.
"The government wants Apple to hack its own users and undermine decades of security advancements that protect our customers — including tens of millions of American citizens — from sophisticated hackers and cybercriminals," Apple writes.
