Tell Canada to Label Genetically Modified Apples

Genetically engineered apples will soon be hitting the shelves of Canada’s shops – but without any labeling to alert the public.

According to a report in The Daily Courier, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada recently approved the genetically-modified, non-browning Arctic Apple for sale in Canada, but without any labels identifying their origin.

However, several research studies have linked genetically-engineered foods to infection and disease in both animals and humans.

“The government needs to ensure consumers can make good decisions and if there is to be a choice on purchasing genetically-modified foods, then the choice should be apparent,” said B.C. Fruit Growers’ Association president Fred Steele.

Furthermore, non-GMO producers fear a market backlash from people trying to avoid purchasing genetically modified apples, which could hurt all apple producers, whether their fruit is genetically-modified or not.

Consumers should have the right to decide if they want to purchase a genetically modified product and non-GMO growers should be protected. Will you help me urge the Canadian government to label genetically modified apples?
