The threat of the blue whale seemed to be over with the ban of whaling back in the late 1980s. However, their populations have not recovered as well as researchers had hoped. A new study of injured and dead blue whales off the coast of California might have found the cause: ships striking these majestic creatures as they swim. It is not uncommon now to see the carcass of a large whale pinned to the bow bulb of a large ship vessel. There is no way to know the actual numbers due to unknown strikes at sea.

What is clear is that the whales are present in certain areas near heavily-used shipping lanes along the California coast, particularly between July and October. The shipping lanes run through some of the area's most heavily used by the whales, putting them at high risk of ship strikes. Since these are areas that the whales find peace in and habitat, California shipping lanes need to be moved.

California Oceanic Shipping Companies - To avoid endangering the blue whales, the high-use area at the western part of the Santa Barbara Channel suggests that moving the shipping route southwards would reduce the risk of ship strikes for blue whales, particularly during July to October. Change your shipping routes so that you no longer place any blue whales in danger of being struck by ships.
