To protect our children and our teachers.
If the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre taught us anything it taught us that teachers and administrators care enough about the lives of those entrusted to them each day to sacrifice their own lives to protect the children in the situation requires it.
Because of the popularity of making schools "Gun free zones" and decades of blaming inanimate objects like guns for the actions of the people who use them we have created many environments that insure every maniac has plenty of "sitting duck" options to choose from if mass murder is his goal.
This must change; our schools are filled with responsible teachers and administrators who are more than capable of being trained in the proper use and safety of a concealed weapon and a sober mindset that already embraces protecting the children above all other concerns.
We are already seeing a push for "more of the same" regarding gun control after this event, this is the definition of pouring gasoline on a fire. We must demand that our leaders stop addressing these events by further inhibiting our ability to defend ourselves and children.
I propose giving all teachers the opportunity to be trained in hand gun safety and use just like our police officers. They should be licensed to carry these weapons at any time they are responsible for the children they teach, a refresher course before each school year and a couple hours per month of practice at the gun range to stay sharp would be an acceptable requirement as well.
It is time for some common sense in this debate, it is time we stop creating huge pockets of potential victims who have no way to protect themselves from those with evil intentions.
