Even though the majority of shelters in Michigan euthanize unwanted pets via lethal injection, there are still a few that operate gas chambers. This method of euthanasia is considered outdated, cruel and inhumane and is unsuitable for a number of animals who are killed.
Grant's bills (SB 423 and 424) would require all shelters and Class B dealers to euthanize animals with an injection of sodium pentobarbitol, which is considered a more humane alternative and is supported by numerous veterinary and animal advocacy organizations.
Homeless pets shouldn't have to spend their last moments on this earth alone, terrified and suffering while they slowly suffocate to death in a gas chamber.
As someone who cares about animal welfare and is concerned with the fate of shelter animals, I'm writing to ask you to support Grant's Bills (SB 423 and 424), which will end the use of gas chambers as a form of euthanasia in Michigan.
Gas chambers are considered a cruel and inhumane way to kill unwanted pets and have already been banned in numerous states. There is absolutely no reason for the remaining few shelters who use this cruel and outdated practice to do so when there is a safer, more humane and less expensive alternative available via lethal injection.
I sincerely hope that you will take a stand for animal welfare and homeless pets and support this important legislation.
