TSA: Train Your Employees to Handle Insulin Pumps Properly!

  • van: Ann M.
  • ontvanger: TSA Deputy John S. Pistole

Colorado Teenager Savannah Barry has Type 1 Diabetes and wants the TSA to receive training on how to handle travelers who must wear an insulin pump 24-hours per day.

Recently, at the Salt Lake City Airport, Savannah was forced to pass through a body scanner while wearing her $10,000 insulin pump.  Savannah had requested a pat-down and presented a doctors statement proving the pump would be damaged in a body scanner - but TSA didn’t listen.

“My life is pretty much in their hands when I walk through a body scanner with my insulin pump on.” Savannah stated.

As predicted, Savannah’s pump was damaged and stopped working properly. Without proper insulin levels a Type-1 Diabetic is at serious risk of complications such as Ketoacidosis, Hypoglycemia, Coma, Seizure and Death.

Don’t let what happened to Savannah happen to anyone else. Demand training for TSA agents so travelers' medical conditions are taken seriously!

Dear Deputy John Pistole,

I (the undersigned) am demanding that TSA agents receive the proper training on how to handle travelers suffering with Type-1 Diabetes and their costly insulin pumps!

These pumps are worn 24-hours per day to prevent complications such as Ketoacidosis, Hypoglycemia, Coma, Seizure and Death. While we understand the serious homeland security concerns facing our nation, educating employees on Type-1 Diabetic dangers and enforcing adherence on the proper way to handle insulin pumps are life-saving measures as well.

Please implement a training program immediately!

Sincerely,
