No to Robbie Keane managing Celtic
NO TO ROBBIE KEANE AT CELTIC
Our Club. Our Values.
As Celtic supporters, we oppose the appointment of Robbie Keane as manager of Celtic Football Club.
Celtic was founded by a community shaped by the experience of colonisation, displacement, poverty and exclusion. Throughout its history, the club and its supporters have identified with oppressed peoples struggling for justice, dignity and self-determination. That tradition remains a central part of Celtic's identity today.
Many Celtic supporters have stood in solidarity with the Palestinian people for decades. For those supporters, Robbie Keane's decision to manage Maccabi Tel Aviv during Israel's assault on Gaza cannot simply be separated from the values Celtic claims to represent. While civilians, journalists, healthcare workers, aid workers and educational institutions were being devastated by war, Keane chose to represent one of Israel's most prominent football clubs.
Whether supporters describe the events in Gaza as genocide, ethnic cleansing, war crimes or a humanitarian catastrophe, there is no denying the immense human suffering that has taken place. For many in the Celtic support, appointing a manager so closely associated with Israeli football during this period would be deeply troubling and morally unacceptable.
Celtic's roots are anti-colonial. Our history teaches us to stand with people facing dispossession, discrimination and state violence, not to ignore their suffering when it becomes politically inconvenient. We cannot celebrate that heritage while disregarding the concerns of supporters who believe the Palestinian people are enduring one of the defining injustices of our time.
Beyond the political and moral questions, this appointment would be unnecessarily divisive. Celtic requires unity, ambition and leadership capable of bringing the support together. Appointing Robbie Keane would create controversy from day one and risk alienating a significant section of the fanbase.
This is not about personal hostility. It is about whether the manager of Celtic Football Club should embody the values, traditions and principles that have defined the club for generations.
We therefore call upon the Celtic board to listen to supporters, respect Celtic's proud tradition of solidarity with oppressed peoples, and rule out the appointment of Robbie Keane as manager.
