Stop Jailing Immigrant Children!

The Summer of 2014 saw a drastic increase of women and children immigrating to the USA from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala to escape severe gang violence and a corrupt government. Being in the U.S. illegally prompted the government to detain these defenseless people in private detention centers with benign names such as the “South Texas Family Residential Center” where they have languished for well over a year! Using terms such as "residential centers" appears to be nothing more than propaganda causing the American public to believe these families are living in temporary housing. But make no mistake – this aren't residential buildings – they are prisons and it has to stop!

It goes against America's fabric to treat families and babies in such a deplorable manner. According to The Daily Beast: A group of faculty from the University of Texas decried the facility in a letter to the university’s president, saying family detention “causes permanent harm to the physical and mental health of young children, compounding the trauma they have experienced in their home countries.”

To make bad matters worse these detention centers of privately operated "for profit" companies that are making millions of dollars by jailing innocent babies. Some of these facilities have even been accused of abuse and neglect of the detainees! Tell President Barack Obama to put an end to this practice and help these immigrants become legal citizens and not permanent prisoners!

Dear President Obama,

We (the undersigned) are extremely disturbed to know that our nation is paying private companies (some accused of abuse and neglect) millions of dollars to detain immigrant families who came here seeking refuge from gang violence and a corrupt system of government.

As you well know, our nation was built by immigrants seeking a better life. To jail these mothers, children and babies is wrong and does not align with our goals as a nation.

How can we allow this to continue and hold our heads up with pride? We can't because to put it plain and simple; this is a massive human rights issue of abuse.

Please take immediate steps to help these families become legal citizens, not indefinite prisoners.

Sincerely,
