Save Field 5 at Ramon Lucio Park

It has been brought to my attention that field five at Ramon Lucio Park is being taken away. I have been told the City of San Marcos plans to turn the field into an all-sports field so it can also be used by flag football and soccer. I have nothing against either sport. My son plays flag football but both flag football and soccer already have beautiful fields at Five Mile Dam Park. In conjunction with other partners, the City of San Marcos spent a lot of money on the new facility. The only fields available to youth baseball are at Ramon Lucio Park.

There is no doubt field five is needed by the youth in San Marcos who play recreational baseball through the city. There is already a shortage of fields for practice and scheduled games. Practices are on Mondays and Fridays. Teams are not guaranteed a field. It is a lottery just to get a practice field and younger teams double up on fields because there are not enough fields available.

Games are on Tuesdays, Thursdays and on Saturdays. Field four is a senior field (age 13 and up) so our youth (ages 4 -12) only have three fields left if field five is taken away. On Saturdays, field five is used all day for scheduled tee ball games. Our largest age group is tee ball and we are taking away their field.

Technically, field five is considered a softball field (all dirt infield). San Marcos has a great softball facility on Hwy 21 near Gary Job Corps. Again, it should be stressed that the only fields available for youth baseball are at Ramon Lucio Park. The youth in San Marcos cannot afford to lose this field.  Also, field five's infield should be converted from all dirt to a youth baseball field so our youth (ages 4-12) have four proper fields available at Ramon Lucio Park.

San Marcos is moving in the wrong direction in support of our youth baseball program. We all know there is great value in team sports. Kids learn discipline, teamwork, the value in sacrifice, setting goals, dealing with success and failure, overcoming adversity and much more. We need to help our San Marcos youth achieve success by supporting their needs in school and out of school.  Please show we support youth baseball in San Marcos, Texas.
