CBC, Don't Censor Anti-Censorship Ads!

The important role of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) as an independent broadcaster is under threat.

Bill C-60, passed in June, allows the government to attend collective bargaining negotiations of Crown corporations, the CBC included. This clearly compromises the CBC's editorial freedom and decision making, but the public remains largely unaware of the change.

An organization called Friends of Canadian Broadcasting submitted ads to be broadcast on the CBC to educate the public on the bill. The ads explain Bill C-60's implications and point out that political interference will water down the reporting Canadians have become used to.

The CBC has refused to run the ads, highlighting the very problem the ads were created to address!

Tell the CBC to stop censoring anti-censorship ads! Canadians have the right to know how this bill will affect them and the state of journalism in Canada.

To The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation,

A number of organizations are working to urge Canada's politicians to restore independence to the CBC. Despite this, you refuse to run ads that counter censorship, the same censorship that may muzzle the journalists who work for the CBC.

Stop censoring anti-censorship ads. Canadians have a right to know about and understand the implications of Bill C-60. By censoring these ads, you do a disservice to Canadians.

The programming and journalism that your organization brings to the Canadian media landscape is immensely important. Don't let Canadians down. Stop censoring anti-censorship ads.

Sincerely,
