Stop PM Abbott from Shutting Down Remote Aboriginal Communities

  • van: Alex B
  • ontvanger: Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott

The Australian government plans to close 150 remote Aboriginal communities in Western Australia, claiming that remote communities are too expensive and unsustainable. Prime Minister Abbott has gone as far as to claim that it's a "lifestyle choice" for Aboriginals to live on these remote lands and that they shouldn't be funded by taxpayer money.

In reality, these lands have been home to native peoples for centuries. This is about Indigenous peoples' rights to the land and Australia's responsibility to strengthen and uphold communities and cultures, not destroy them by kicking people off their land and expecting them to assimilate into Australian society.

Now, many outraged Australians are taking to the streets in protest. Will you join us and show your support by signing the petition today?

Many remote communities are plagued by social problems like drug and alcohol abuse, child sexual abuse and low school attendance rates. But instead of cutting budgets and opting to close these communities, the government needs to dedicate more resources and support to help heal these at-risk groups.

Communities need superior roads, schools, hospitals and programs that will uplift communities instead of run them into the ground.

Please sign the petition to show that you stand for Australia's Aboriginal peoples' rights to their land. Urge Prime Minister Abbott to reverse plans to shut down remote communities, and instead dedicate much-needed funds to uphold Indigenous rights.
