This State Wants to Pass a Rule that Will Close the Door to LGBTQ Foster Children

It's the new year - time to start things off on the right foot. But in West Virginia, lawmakers are doing the exact opposite. The West Virginia Legislature's rule-making review committee just recently passed a rule that would allow foster care agencies to refuse assistance to LGBTQ kids, or parents hoping to help them.

Tell the West Virginia Legislature and Governor to vote NO on the homophobic law that discriminates against LGBTQ children and parents.

According to The Register-Herald, the proposal would require foster children and parents to have "equal access to services" only if they belong to "classes already protected by state and federal law." Currently, there are no LGBTQ protections under WV law, and the Trump administration has been pushing hard to reverse national protections for the group in any program funded by the federal government.

If this law goes into effect, it could be disastrous.

In the last decade, West Virginia has seen a more than 75% increase of children placed in foster care; currently they have 7,000 children in their system. Many of these children are part of the LGBTQ community, and others that may need to enter the system in the future will be too. But if WV lawmakers have their way, these kids would be turned away, and LGBTQ parents who want to foster would also have the door slammed in their face.

Luckily, the law hasn't been voted on by the full WV legislature just yet. Now is the time to act and tell WV politicians that this is not only a bad idea but a mean and hateful one at that.

Sign the petition and tell West Virginia to say NO to this new and discriminatory rule.
