Urge Facebook to Ban Suicide Videos!

On December 30th, 12-year-old Katelyn Nicole Davis live streamed her own suicide by hanging. Though her family deleted the 40-minute video, many copies are still circulating online.

Other social media properties such as YouTube quickly deleted the video and penalized users for sharing it. But when someone reports the video on Facebook, they receive an automated response. The response says, "We've looked over the post, and although it doesn't go against any of our specific Community Standards, you did the right thing by letting us know about it." Facebook then gives instructions for how to block users or see less of their content.

Suicide and self-harm videos should be against Facebook's Community Standards. They cause pain to family members and disturb innocent Facebook users who see the video on their feeds. Such videos may also desensitize people and encourage self-harming behavior. Compared to certain content that Facebook does ban, such as artwork that includes nude body parts, suicide videos are much more harmful and hurtful.

Please sign the petition to urge Facebook to quickly delete all suicide and self-harm videos from their platform and to penalize users who share such content.

I am concerned that Facebook's Community Standards don't ban suicide videos.
