G8 - Clamp Down on Overuse of antibiotics in food production

It's time to clamp down on the overuse of antibiotics – not just by our doctors, but the farms and fisheries that produce the food we eat. The overuse of antibiotics in intensive livestock farming could lead to the evolution of strains of dangerous bacteria, including MRSA, E coli and salmonella, that are resistant to some of the strongest antibiotics. These can spread from farms to farm workers and their families as well as to consumers through affected meat.

Coordinated international action is needed to prevent this turning into a public health catastrophe.

England’s Chief Medical Officer has said, "The soaring number of antibiotic-resistant infections poses such a great threat to society that in 20 years' time we could be taken back to a 19th century environment where everyday infections kill us as a result of routine operations."

We can't let that happen. Antibiotic resistance is as real a threat as climate change. Please, sign the petition and take action now.

England’s Chief Medical Officer, Dame Sally Davies, said, "The soaring number of antibiotic-resistant infections poses such a great threat to society that in 20 years' time we could be taken back to a 19th century environment where everyday infections kill us as a result of routine operations."
