Google, Don't Be Evil

Don't Be Evil.

For nearly two decades, that phrase began Google's Code of Conduct and served as a motto for the company. But sometime in the last month, Google quietly removed the phrase, leaving many wondering if that meant Google was now going to the dark side.

The removal of the phrase is particularly suspicious considering that thousands of employees have been publicly protesting Google's participation in Project Maven, a U.S. Department of Defense program to speed up analysis of military drone footage. Last week, several employees even resigned over Project Maven, and expressed concern over Google's growing interest in military work.

Technology can, and should, be a force for good. Please join in demanding that Google reinstate "Don't Be Evil" into its Code of Conduct.

Project Maven isn't the only cause for concern among employees. They have also accused the company of being less transparent with employees and with the public, especially about experiments with new technologies that are designed to deceive users or use their data to control them.

Google set a standard for tech with its "Don't Be Evil" motto, but now it seems to be content building the infrastructure for dystopia. Please sign this petition demanding that Google reverse course.
