Paramount, parent company to CBS, settled a lawsuit with President Trump days before canceling CBS's 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert' calling into question the timing and the reasoning behind the move.
Stephen Colbert, a vocal critic of the Trump administration, took the reins as host of 'The Late Show' in 2015, following the departure of David Letterman. For 7 seasons, beginning in 2023, the show has maintained the position of highest rated late night talk show. The show is the only late night talk show to demonstrate continued gains in viewership and has also been nominated for two Emmy's for 2025.
In October 2024, President Trump sued Paramount alleging that CBS attempted to manipulate the 2024 election by deceptively editing a '60 Minutes' interview with then VP Kamala Harris. It has been alleged that Paramount settled the lawsuit with President Trump to appease the President whose FCC can either approve or deny a pending merger of Paramount with Skydance Media
The success of the 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert' coupled with the timing of the cancellation of the program call into question the reasoning behind the termination leaving people wondering whether the cancellation was part of the settlement. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Adam Schiff have demanded to know whether the cancellation was politically motivated. Now we the people are demanding an answer as well.
