This School Called The Police On A Mother Because They Didn't Like How She Was Dressed

It's been years since Joselyn Lewis was a student but that didn't stop administrators at a Houston High School from treating her like a child.

The mother had stopped by Madison High School to register her daughter for class when things took an unexpected and offensive turn. Staff at the school asked her to leave the premises because her outfit didn't fit the school's dress code. Thinking the employee was joking, she explained that she was there to register her daughter for school. Yet, that didn't change the worker's stance. She was still asked to leave.

What was so offensive that a school would tell a grown woman – a mother of a child who was to attend their school? Joselyn was wearing a t-shirt dress the school deemed "too short" and a headscarf.

In an interview with a local channel, Lewis said she was on her way to get her hair done, thus the headscarf, and that her dress passed the "finger length test".

Lewis then asked to see the so-called dress code for parents but the school wouldn't show her any documentation and when she refused to leave they actually called the police!!!

The behavior of Madison High School's administrators is mind-boggling. Not only did they treat Joselyn as if she were a disrespectful uppity child – they were willing to put her life in danger by calling the police over her outfit!

Joselyn, for her part, said it best:

"I don't have to get all dolled up to enroll [my daughter] to school. My child's education, anyone's child's education, should be more important than what someone has on. That shouldn't matter."

She is 100% correct. Whoever is behind the decision to treat Ms. Lewis this way needs serious disciplinary action and she deserves a full and complete apology not just from the school but the entire school district.

Update #14 jaar geleden
The principal, at James Madison HS, has doubled down and issues a very targeted dress code for parents. The prohibited clothing seems to be specifically aimed towards black women parents. Brown, who is black herself, should be ashamed of herself. Sign to demand action now. Please share this petition to keep up the pressure.
