Establish a Rails to Trails from Flint River to New Market

Madison County Rails to Trails is a grassroots group of volunteers that have joined together with other organizations in Madison County to pursue the possibility of creating a trail stretching from Flint River to New Market, Alabama. Total length would be 7 miles and the surface would be crush and run to allow non-motorized horse, bike, and foot traffic. The long term proposal is for the trail to stretch along the old L&N railroad easement, where shorter term goals will evaluate sections of that length, e.g. Flint River to County Lake Road or Naugher to Flint River. Along the length of the old L&N easement the track and ties have been removed, but luckily the county purchased the land. With safety and security as #1, an effort is underway to reach out to the local community to capture interest in establishing a trail along the easement. Safety and security will focus on reducing 4-wheeler traffic via barricades and/or other deterrents. The county should be taking action to eliminate 4-wheeler traffic, so contact District 1 County Commissioner to eliminate illegal 4-wheeler and other motorized traffic.
