Brownie, a small Chihuahua mix, was found extremely lethargic and limp, lying next to fresh waste, after officers discovered she had amphetamine, methamphetamine, OxyContin, and buprenorphine in her system. Two weeks later, another Chihuahua named Baby Girl was found showing the same signs of overdose, with methamphetamine, amphetamines, and benzodiazepines in her body. A third dog, Vada, was also found with methamphetamine, amphetamines, and oxycodone in her system. These three small, defenseless dogs were exposed to dangerous drugs while in the care of people who were supposed to protect them.

Thankfully, all three dogs have since been rescued and are healthy and safe at the Fresno Animal Center. But they never should have been in danger in the first place. Each of them was found in the middle of a crisis they had no way to understand or escape, carrying substances in their small bodies that put their lives at serious risk.
The people caring for these dogs were clearly not well. A lifetime ban on animal ownership would make sure these dogs, and any animal in the future, never end up back in a home where their safety depends on someone who is struggling this deeply. Mandatory mental health counseling addresses the root of what led to this harm, offering real support to the people responsible while making sure no other animal pays the price for it.
Justice here means protecting the vulnerable, both the dogs who already suffered and the ones who could be next.
