The park boundry around Alaska's Denali National Park's used to be a buffer zone closed to wolf hunting, until the Board of Game eliminated the buffer in 2010.
Since the elimination of the buffer zone, wolves have the lowest count in 26 years in Denali National Park and Preserve. Visitors to the park now only have a 12% chance of seeing a wolf. A year ago there were 70 - now there are only 49- a signifigant decrease. In 2011, the Grant Creek pack numbered 15 wolves, but is now down to just three wolves, according to the Park Service.
Without the buffer zone, people lure wolves out of the park to kill them; wolf pelts are valued at $100 up to several hundred dollars each.
We ask the Alaska Board of Game re-instate the buffer zone where trapping and hunting are illegal. Keep the integrity of Denali National Park for everyone, including visitors who travel to see wolves- not just for the special interest of hunters and trappers.
