This Health System is Playing Fast and Loose With Its Patients’ Private Information!

Confidentiality between a doctor and their patients is the cornerstone of any health system. The policy ensures that a patient feels completely comfortable divulging the often sensitive information necessary for a physician to diagnose and treat while protecting the patient's human right of personal privacy. But the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) of the United Kingdom has thrown all that out the window simply to turn a profit.

Sign the petition today and demand that the DHSC stop selling patient data if they cannot truly anonymize it!

The DHSC has been compiling data from patients of the National Health Service (NHS) and selling it to overseas drug companies in the name of "research." To do so, they promised that the patients' information has been completely safeguarded through a promise of anonymization. However, officials from the NHS now say that anonymizing this data is a fantasy. The richness of these medical records is not only what makes them valuable but also what creates a sort of "fingerprint," allowing drug companies and other interested parties to quickly identify a person whose data is especially attractive to them.

Not only is this a gross invasion of privacy, but it is being accomplished through deceit. The DHSC called the process totally "anonymous," but quickly changed its language to "anonymized" after concerns were raised about the evidence that drug companies were using their data to identify patients based on data. Small pivots like this in wording and meaning only work to complicate and cloud the truth. Many patients are being tricked in other ways too. According to DHSC policy, patients must actively opt out of the system if they do not want their information sold. That means, if they fail to do so, their information is automatically eligible to be sold to Big Pharma.

This is shameful. The DHSC must take responsibility and be a champion of the people, not of greedy drug companies in an era when the issues of data and privacy are more important and complicated than ever. Please, sign the petition and tell the DHSC to keep patients' data private!
