Demand the ban of the retail sale of dogs, cats, and rabbits in Abbotsford

Ask Abbotsford to ban the retail sale of dogs, cats and rabbits at pet stores.



It’s 2018, and some pet stores are still selling puppies, kittens, and rabbits. These animals are usually kept in a small glass cage 24 hours a day. They are then sold without being spayed or neutered, and without any spay or neuter contract in place, contributing to the already horrendous problem of pet over population. These animals which are sold in pet stores are usually from “puppy mills”, where they are kept in questionable conditions, and their mother is used a breeding machine for profit.

There are already thousands of dogs, cats and rabbits that are in animal shelters who are looking for homes. Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats. Each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized (1.2 million dogs and 1.4 million cats)... Most of these animals are friendly and healthy and highly adoptable!

Abbotsford needs to get on board with the city of Vancouver and Surrey who have already banned the retail sale of these pets in pet stores. In turn, pet stores can start to work with rescue groups and local shelters to help get pets in need adopted.
