Voting is an amazing privilege that so many in the world don't have. And right now, many Americans don’t have it either. That’s because, for millions of Americans across the country, Election Day is just another work day. Some folks can’t afford to lose wages, while others are not permitted to leave work to go vote. And, of course, because polling places are determined by a person’s home address, they’re often located far away from that person’s work.
Democracy is stronger when everyone participates - but it can be hard for working families or senior citizens to get to the polls on time. A national holiday would allow these families the time they need to vote without stress, shorten the lines since there's no post-work rush, and even allow you the time to volunteer for your favorite leaders.
This year, we have already seen folks trying to stifle voting rights by making polling places less accessible, limiting early voting and requiring voters to have certain kinds of ID. All of this is in an effort to silence certain voters. Making November 8th a national holiday would allow more people to vote and make it harder to suppress citizens’ voices resulting in fairer elections.
