Don't Kill Roosters for Doggie Decor!
Because feather weave extensions did not look silly enough on humans, now some pet owners are using them to adorn their dogs. It might seem harmless enough--until you find out how, exactly, these feathers are produced.
Whiting Farms breeds roosters specifically for their gorgeous tail feathers which retail at ridiculous prices--one particularly rare plume sold for $480 on Ebay. The birds are kept in isolation for six months and then euthanized prior to being "harvested," according to a recent Seattle Times article. And this is a mercy killing because, according to experts, a rooster is unlikely to survive having its tail feathers ripped out.
Tell Whiting Farms not to raise roosters for doggie decor and not to promote feather extensions for dogs!
We the undersigned believe that breeding and euthanizing roosters for decorative "saddle" feathers is cruel and shows a basic disrespect for life. Particularly troubling is the latest trend of weaving feathers into dog fur. Dogs are not sensitive to fashion. In fact, it could be argued that subjecting a dog to a weave is a further form of cruelty--to the dog. This practice is beyond ridiculous. We respectfully request that you desist from promoting the use of rooster feathers as dog decor and that you not breed roosters for that purpose.
