Scout is a beautiful 10-year-old collie. He is also the victim of a horrible crime.
His owners couldn't afford to take care of him anymore and instead of relinquishing him to someone who could, they tried to murder him with a BB gun. Fortunately, he survived. Unfortunately, New Jersey authorities don't think this was animal cruelty.
Please sign my petition asking that this couple be charged with animal cruelty. We need to send the message loud and clear to abusers that we, as a society, will not stand for it. After their failed attempt to brutally murder their dog in an inhumane way failed, they brought him to a vet clinic where he was treated. Now Scout is living with one of the vets who saved him. But the poor guy must be suffering so much from the way his oweners treated him.
What's heartwrenching about this story for me is how old Scout is. I have adopted two senior dogs and they make the most loving family members. The fact that this couple assessed their dog and decided his life didn't matter is just horrible. There are so many senior-specific rescue groups and people like me who love to adopt older dogs.
Worst of all, the couple is charged only with unlawful posession of weapon, not animal cruelty. I cannot understand how local authorities made this decision because this is textbook animal cruelty.
