CANCEL the 2015-16 hunting season of the Alexander Archipelago wolf.

  • van: Joan Hunter
  • ontvanger: Bruce Dale, Acting Director of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game

The Alexander Archipelago wolf is an integral part of the ecosystem in Alaska's Tongass National Forest, where these wolves primarily live.  With their population numbering as low as fifty animals now, down from over 900 in 1994, it is unconscionable that they have not yet been declared as a threatened species, despite several efforts over the years by various conservation groups, including Greenpeace.  As evidenced last season, hunters have proved to be their biggest threat at the moment.  And for what?  Not their meat, but for SPORT, for the supposed thrill of it.  While the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is debating whether this wolf species can be declared endangered (which is shocking it itself), immediate action needs to be taken to urge the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to stop the upcoming hunting season.  It is regrettable too, that one person who was advocating for the wolves' protection, Dr. David Person, left the position in 2013.  It seems no one has since take on this work since his departure.  We implore you to put an immediate end to this season's hunting of this special and rare animal.  The Alexander Archipelago wolf's very survival depends on what we do NOW.  The hunting season is scheduled to begin in August, so this is urgent.  There is no time to waste.
