Globally, three out of four mother pigs are raised in barren factory farms where they are confined to tiny steel cages no bigger than a household fridge. They cannot even turn around. To maximise profit, they're forced to give birth to large litters of piglets, until their bodies are exhausted. These unspeakable factory farm conditions cause pigs to develop skin lesions, digestive problems and lung disease.
But it's not just physical pain they endure. Pigs are as intelligent as toddlers. On factory farms, they're desperately bored and frustrated, so they bite their cages.
Big name supermarkets spend millions of dollars each year sourcing pork from producers around the world. They have the power to change pigs' lives by refusing to source pork from producers that keep pigs in cruel, confined conditions. But supermarkets will only do this if they know it's important for their customers.
