Tell Norwegian Minister to Clean Up or Clear Out of Clayoquot

Clayoquot Sound, on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Colombia, is the largest intact rainforest left on Vancouver Island with old growth trees over 1700 years old. It is one of the largest and richest temperate rainforests on the planet, and the pristine waters of Clayoquot are essential for the survival of wild salmon. Clayoquot Sound became a United Nations Biosphere Reserve in January 2000 because of the ecological importance of this ancient temperate rainforest region. But farmed salmon threaten this delicate ecosystem.

Clayoquot Sound's largest salmon farming company is 80% owned by the Norwegian government. They are exporting waste, disease, habitat loss, and impacts to wild salmon within Clayoquot Sound. There is a solution. Closed containment salmon farms or clear out. Please take action today to protect this precious place on the planet.
I wish to express my concern over Cermaq’s/Mainstream Canada's abysmal record in the Clayoquot Sound, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The litany of fines, charges, disease outbreaks and escapes involving Cermaq in the last 4 years are as follows:

- in 2003 Cermaq racked up more fines than any other B.C. salmon farming company
- the company pleaded guilty to 11 charges and were fined a total of Canadian $3,110 for regulatory violations including failure to prevent escapes and to keep drug records
- in 2002 the company were charged with 19 counts of provincial regulator violations and fined Canadian $2,500
- in 2001 five farms in Clayoquot Sound were found to be in violation of the Waste Management Act
- IHN has decimated Cermaq’s salmon farm operations in Clayoquot Sound
- Disease led to Cermaq slaughtering 9,000 tonnes of B.C. farmed salmon .

There are a number of other concerns such as the transfer of sea lice to wild migrating smolts, deadzones around farms do to untreated waste disposal and the use of chemicals and biocides in the marine environment.
