Wyoming: Don't Wipe Out Your Wolves Again

Wyoming is where wolves made a comeback thanks to the tireless efforts of wildlife managers to reintroduce the species. Now, the federal government has given the state carte blanche to essentially wipe them out again.

As of Aug. 31, the government officially removed Wyoming wolves from the Endangered Species List and handed over their management to the state. The problem? To Wyoming, "management" means allowing wolves to be killed indiscriminately in over 90 percent of the state.

Humans already destroyed the United States' wolf population once. We saw the havoc it wreaked on the entire Northern Rockies system. We can't allow the short-sighted, anti-wolf interests to do it again.

Wolves deserve to be protected. Tell Wyoming wildlife managers to listen to science and use a wolf management plan that ensures wolves aren't hunted near extinction again.
Dear [Decision Maker],

I am shocked and disappointed in Wyoming's wolf management plan to be implemented now that the state's wolves have been removed from the Endangered Species List. After nearly two decades of tireless work to reintroduce wolves throughout the Northern Rockies region and restore balance to the ecosystem, your plan threatens to take us back to square one.

[Your comments will be added here.]

The reintroduction of wolves is one of the single biggest successes in the conservation movement. By allowing indiscriminate wolf hunting throughout 90 percent of the state, you are putting this success and the very survival of wolves at risk.

I urge you to amend your plan so it protects -- not destroys -- the Wyoming wolf population we've worked so hard to restore.
