Tell Congress to Support Victory Gardens to Fight COVID-19

The first Victory Garden movement began during World War I and became an ongoing part of American life after the Spanish Flu pandemic swept around the world and led to mass social distancing. Americans were encouraged to grow fruits and vegetables in whatever spaces they could — rooftops, fire escapes, empty lots, schools, and backyards. These gardens persisted right through the Great Depression and World War II. At one point, 20 million backyard, school and community gardens provided more than 40% of the vegetables eaten in the USA.

Now, with global supply chains disrupted, and with social distancing becoming an act of patriotism and self-preservation, local food self-reliance is more important than ever.

Studies show that when people grow more vegetables, they eat more vegetables. In a nation beset by obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's and cancer, the need to eat more vegetables, and to move towards a whole foods, plant-based diet, has never been more urgent. It's time to bring back the Victory Garden movement!

Tell Congress to support a new Victory Garden movement by funding:

  • Mass promotion of Victory Garden campaigns, to make gardening patriotic again.
  • Subsidy of seeds and basic gardening tools and supplies, especially for low-income communities.
  • Establishment of large-scale gardening education campaigns, including training gardening coaches who can mentor home gardeners.

Sign the petition today to urge your Congressional representative to support a new Victory Garden movement!

Dear Representative [Name],

As your constituent, I'm writing to express my support for a new Victory Garden movement, and to respectfully request that you co-sponsor legislation to promote food self-reliance and healthy eating.

We can derive inspiration from the Victory Gardens of the mid-20th century, when patriotic Americans responded to World War I, the Spanish Flu pandemic, the great depression, and World War II, by growing more than 40% of the nation's vegetables in backyard gardens.

Now, with global supply chains disrupted, and with social distancing becoming an act of patriotism and self-preservation, home and community gardens, and local food self-reliance are more important than ever.

Studies show that when people grow more vegetables, they eat more vegetables. And in a world beset by obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's and cancer, the need to eat more vegetables has never been more urgent.

It's time to bring back the Victory Garden movement!

Please support a new Victory Garden movement by passing legislation to fund:

  • Mass promotion of  Victory Garden campaigns, to make gardening patriotic again.

  • Subsidy of seeds and basic gardening tools and supplies, especially for low-income communities.

  • Establishment of large-scale gardening education campaigns, including training gardening coaches who can mentor home gardeners.

Thank you for helping to ensure that all Americans have healthy food to eat
