A Day of Remembrance

Tell President Bush that we want a Day of Remembrance for all who died during The Burning Times, both here and abroad.

For three centuries of early modern European history, diverse societies were consumed by a panic over alleged witches in their midst. Witch-hunts, especially in Central Europe, resulted in the trial, torture, and execution of tens of thousands of victims, about three-quarters of whom were women. Arguably, neither before nor since have adult European women been selectively targeted for such largescale atrocities.

During the 'burning times in this country,' between 1450 and 1700, thousands of alleged witches, mostly women, were burned or hanged. To the authorities that made and enforced these laws centuries ago, total elimination of witchcraft was their ultimate goal. If not, to their belief, Satan and the forces of the so-called evil would prevail.

We must never forget the hundreds of thousands of men, women and even children who were tortured and killed simply for being accused of Witchcraft.
