President Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani has indicated that Trump would agree to an interview with Special Counselor Robert Mueller under the precondition that questions centered on whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia ahead of the 2016 election and not on the topic of obstruction of justice.
Trump landed himself in hot water when he attempted to influence then-FBI Director James Comey's investigation of Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn, telling Comey, "I hope you can let it go." For many experts, this is clear-cut evidence of obstruction of justice.
Robert Mueller must not let Trump dictate the terms of this lawful, necessary investigation. Trump has shown that he will stop at nothing to subvert justice, but despite his best efforts, he is not above the law.
As history has shown, it's often not the suspected crime but the cover-up that has taken its toll on past presidents, leading to the resignation of Richard Nixon and impeachment of Bill Clinton. The question of whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to influence the outcome of the 2016 election is a separate crime – albeit monumentally nefarious – from the subsequent efforts to interfere with the investigation.
