Laws Governing Animal Abuse/Cruelty

  • van: Beth Ladnier

As laws currently stand in the state of Mississippi, one is able to inflict deliberate acts of cruelty and abuse on animals and punishment will be received as a misdemeanor crime.
It is time for this state to wake up and stop allowing sensless abuse and cruelty to animals.

Dear Governor Barbour,
I and all the undersigned believe that the animal cruelty and abuse laws concerning animals is far behind in the times. We urge you to please sign any act of legislation to toughen the laws concerning the welfare of animals in this state.
Three recent cases of abuse that will and have only resulted in a misdemeanor sentence are:
A cat thrown into a vat of boiling grease at a restraunt, a house full of dogs and cats that literally cooked to death because there was no ventilation as they were trapped in the midst of summer for days, possibly weeks; And most recent was "Buddy" a dog whom was found beaten with his eyes, ears and mouth glued shut.
Numerous psychologists have reported that killers and people that have committed serious violent crimes began their vilence by abusing animals.
We do not tolerate abuse of children, elders, or spouses, yet the law currently says it is "OK" to kick the dog, stab the cat, toss a litter of kittens in the river, and whatever else one wants to do.
We must change the laws regarding animal welfare in this state. We must send a message to all citizens in Mississippi that it is not "OK" to take our frustrations out on our four legged friends.
