Tell Your Senators: Don't Punish Medical Marijuana Users Like My Mom

Once my mom Kathy started chemotherapy for colon cancer, only one thing helped her maintain an appetite and deal with the crippling nausea — marijuana.

Twelve years after her death, 23 states have laws allowing the use of medical marijuana. And yet states, prescribing medical professionals, vendors, and medical marijuana users like my mom could all still be punished for violating federal anti-marijuana laws.

Progressive Democrats Cory Booker (New Jersey) and Kirsten Gillibrand (New York) joined with conservative Republicans Rand Paul (Kentucky) and Dean Heller (Nevada) to introduce medical marijuana legislation in the US Senate that would help people like my mom.

This historic legislation, S. 683, would provide access to medical marijuana, enable research into the medicinal properties of marijuana, and require the federal government to respect state laws concerning medicinal marijuana.

I know from my mom's experience that medical marijuana can ease the suffering of cancer patients and other people with serious illnesses. Please urge your Senators to support S. 683 and a more compassionate drug policy.

Dear Senator,

I strongly urge you to support S. 683, which would provide access to medical marijuana, enable research into the medicinal properties of marijuana, and require the federal government to respect state laws concerning medicinal marijuana.

Marijuana can ease the pain and suffering of people with cancer, HIV/AIDS, glaucoma, and other illnesses. States should be free to allow their residents to avail themselves of such potentially helpful treatment.

Twenty three states now have laws allowing the use of medical marijuana. And yet, these states, prescribing medical professionals, vendors, and medical marijuana users could all still punished for violating federal anti-marijuana laws.

The time has come to end the federal prohibition on medical marijuana. Please support S. 683.

Sincerely,
