Keep 350 million tons of coal in the ground!

  • van: Sierra Club

The Forest Service recently proposed a loophole that would give Arch Coal, the second largest coal company in the country, access to 19,000 acres of public, roadless forest so it can bulldoze Colorado's wild lands in order to build coal roads and scrape methane well pads.

The Arch Coal Loophole would grant Arch and one other coal mine access to 350 million tons of publicly-owned coal and unleash more than half a billion tons of carbon pollution into our climate so one coal company can reap huge profits.

We have a chance to stop this destructive mine expansion before it starts and keep the coal in the ground by making it clear this plan will do irreparable damage to our environment.

Take action now to tell the Forest Service to stop climate disruption at its source by keeping the coal in the ground!
Dear Chief Thomas Tidwell, U.S. Forest Service:

I urge you to reject the proposed Arch Coal Loophole. Any way you slice it, this is a raw deal for the American people. This unnecessary trade-off is bad for our forests and public lands, bad for our climate, and bad for the American people. The Forest Service should not sacrifice 19,000 acres of important roadless habitat and open up half a billion tons of carbon pollution just so Arch Coal can line its pockets. The Obama Administration has shown real leadership on climate, but this would be a big step backwards. It's not surprising that Arch Coal wants this loophole, but the Forest Service shouldn't undermine the President's climate goals just to appease one coal company. The Forest Service should reject the Arch Coal Loophole to protect our public lands and our climate for the good of the American people.
